American Apparel – Dynasty

Wednesday, 9 February, 2011

When I saw this color’s name, the theme song from Dynasty (one of my all time favorite shows growing up, btw) popped into my head:

Hah. So now I’m really showing my age. The 80s were marked with big hair, bad eye make-up and this very odd obsession with purple. I remember seeing so many hues of purple that I honestly thought I was just going to die a purple death. Then, just when I thought I was in the clear, along came the 90s with that f***ing awful purple THING called Barney. I have never hated the color purple so much. I actually banned myself from ever wearing purple until very recently…

Terribly irrational, I know. It’s just how I am.

Revlon – Not So Blueberry

Monday, 7 February, 2011

This particular Monday started out as such…I was driving hubby to the train station. While stuck in traffic this is how the conversation went:

Me: (holding my fingertips under his nose) SMELL MY FINGERS!

Him: (shaking his head and holding his breath)

Me: Seriously, smell my fingers!

Him: (sniffs cautiously) Oh…that smells quite nice! It smells like blueberries!

Butter London – Marrow

Thursday, 27 January, 2011

Despite the creepy name, this color is gorgeous. This is the color of marrow when viewed under a microscope, but when extracted, it’s all red. I’m always amazed at what a small amount of bone marrow can do. If I remember correctly, when a friend’s mother got a bone marrow transplant, it took a mere 50 CCs to save her life – roughly a little under 3.5 Tablespoons. Amazing. But to get that it’s incredibly painful, so to the donor who saved my friend’s mother’s life all those years ago – thank you!

Anyway…

China Glaze – Below Deck vs Channelesque

Tuesday, 18 January, 2011

Below Deck is from China Glaze’s new Spring 2011 collection, Anchors Away. When China Glaze discontinued Channelesque, it was a sad day for nail polish lovers. I happened to find a bottle of it in the clearance bin of the nail polish guy I frequent in Arizona. I got it for a $1.50. Had I known it was discontinued, I’d have picked up the other bottle!

However, Below Deck is a good substitute.

Come on in and see why I think it’s a good thing!

Ginger & Liz Who’s The Boss?

Tuesday, 11 January, 2011

I love Ginger & Liz Whos The Boss. Ginger and Liz have been cracking me up with the 80s names of polishes. Goin’ Back to Cali and now Who’s The Boss? I’m having flashbacks of my youth! Did I just reveal how old I am to you whippersnappers?!

Yet another gorgeous purple that Ginger & Liz have knocked out of the ballpark! I’m so bad at application, but I love how even with my worst applications, Ginger & Liz still look halfway decent on me. This was an awesome plum shade that delivered.

I don’t know what’s happened in the past year and a half, but I’ve picked up some serious love for purple polishes. When they keep looking this good and with this kind of application, I’ll keep falling for them and buying them!

Formula for Ginger & Liz Whos The Boss was great – high gloss on the first and second coats that dried quickly in between. Opaque in two coats. Woo hoo!

Ginger & Liz Whos The Boss.

Ginger & Liz Whos The BossGinger & Liz Whos The Boss – Sunlight. I swear, I ruined the photos because of the cuticle oil. You can’t see the super high glossy shine of this color.

Ginger & Liz Hold The Drama

Ginger & Liz Hold The Drama

Once again, Ginger & Liz totally make me have much love for them. Somehow, somewhere along the way the nail polish gods heard my pleas for colors that would look good on a brown girl like me…nearly all of the colors I have from G&L (save for one that was ok, but it wasn’t a disaster) have looked good enough when worn and have garnered some wonderful compliments.

The formula for Ginger & Liz Hold The Drama was a dream and the gloss was incredibly high and gorgeous…which I ruined the moment I did the cuticle oil.

Ginger & Liz Hold The Drama is truly the perfect purple I looked for in a creme that was close to eggplant but didn’t turn to a near black when dry. If you’re into purple polishes, this is one you shouldn’t pass up.

Dior – Purple Revolution

Tuesday, 28 December, 2010

I’ve been eyeballing Dior polishes for some time now. I just never really had the urge to buy them because the colors don’t really appeal to me. This one reached out enough for me to be tempted into buying.

The formula was lush and just all around luxurious. It’s what I expect in a bottle of nail polish I’m forking out some serious money for. It dried fairly fast and was opaque in two coats.

It’s almost vampy…

…and it remains totally dark and gorgeous in the sun. While not a traditional purple I was expecting, it was a yummy plummy color.

If other Diors are like this, I’ll gladly keep buying this brand.

Nubar – Purple Rain Glitter

Monday, 22 November, 2010

Everytime I was writing Purple Rain Glitter on the images, I kept thinking I got the name wrong. Maybe it was Purple Rain and I added the word “Glitter” as a reminder of what it was. Nope. Checked the label, Purple Rain Glitter.

Ok, so for once my desire to constantly edit didn’t stand in the way!

What was cool about this purple is that it’s like a royal purple – very pretty and very flattering. Tossed into all of that is this nutty sparkly glitter. I don’t know where this all came from, but I’m suddenly having a huge love of purple nail polish. Like I don’t understand why when I normally never gave purple a second glance. Lately, I’ve been gravitating towards purple and I’m a bit dismayed/puzzled by my choices.

Oh well, I won’t dwell on it, but I do know that I love purple polishes now.

Ka-ching! Check out the Purple Rain Glitter goodness. Of course, I did have Prince’s Purple Rain running in my head as I was applying this color, but only because I’m so utterly predictable.

Sunlight, once again, shows my deficiency in polish application. I wish I weren’t so heavy handed!
