I found this in my email box this morning from someone in my indian connection mailing list…It’s a list for expats living in the area where I live. Now, maybe I’m being a bitch…but she comes across as a bit…I don’t know…cunty? I still had to LOL.

No lie here, but it seems like she was way over the top in dealing with this guy.

I have lived in many other cities before India and I have never had to write something like this before so bear with me.

This is just to let you be aware of a driver who was in my employment for about 9 weeks. His name is Binod Rai and I believe he is in his 40s. He is bespectacled and has a mole on his left cheek. He comes from Assam near Darjeeling. He is married with 3 children.

Terms and conditions of his employment were set down by him during the interview and agreed upon by all parties concerned.

After just 9 weeks, he asked for 2 weeks extended leave on the pretext of a family crisis back in his hometown of Assam. He had given me 4 days notice in writing. We had agreed that he had to provide a temporary driver during his absence. Even though I wasn’t quite satisfied with the substitute driver, I was prepared to put up with him till Binod resume work. Besides, I wasn’t going to be able to find another driver in just 4 days. I really didn’t have a choice as he was adamant on going back to his village. We agreed he was only going away for 2 weeks.

He was due back on the 17th of April. When the time came, I called him to confirm and he then told
me if this substitute driver was good, to retain his services and if I wasn’t satisfied, to go look for someone else. He wasn’t coming back to work. And that was that! At no point in the last 9 weeks of his employment with us did he ever mentioned once to my husband or myself that he was seeking alternative employment.

Imagine my shock when I found out this evening that he had found alternative employment with an unsuspecting employer in the same compound. The whole time I was worried for him in his village dealing with his family crisis, he had been actually driving for that employer, who lives 2 blocks down from me, for the last 3 weeks. He never left Gurgaon. DLF Management had called to inform me. He is now banned from working at The Aralias and given 2 weeks notice to leave his present employer.

I know this is nothing quite so unusual in this country but Enough is Enough!!!

They have their families to take care of, so do we!! He did not think twice about leaving my children and myself on the lurch.

I just don’t want anyone else to fall prey to his lies and arrogance again! And I cannot and will not set a precedent that poaching staff is tolerated (but in this case, he clearly lied to get employment from this unsuspecting employer) or that domestic staff can play 1 employer against another especially within the same compound. My family’s well being and security are my highest priority and I shall not compromise on them. I shall also not allow my family to be an easy target for ungrateful and dishonourable domestic staff.

Once again, my sincere apologies for taking up your time on a matter of such nature.

Frankly, I can’t help but wonder why he left…Indians are fairly passive aggressive. They don’t like confrontations and I’ll be honest, she sounds like a raging bitch. Getting him banned from the entire complex? YIKES. Personally, I think she was so hard to work for he had to leave.

Now, I know our driver is punctually challenged, but he’s a good kid.

Thoughts? Or am I being too harsh and judgmental?
