Essie – Smokin’ Hot vs Zoya – Kelly

Wednesday, 17 November, 2010

Essie’s Smokin’ Hot is literally, smokin’ hot. It’s gorgeous. It’s plummier, yummier. So gorgeous. Hotter. It’s a great way for Essie to say hello to the Holidays for 2010. Zoya’s Kelly holds its own quite well and is gorgeous, but when pitted against Essie, I definitely prefer Smokin’ Hot.

While Essie shines in color, it is, quite sadly, deficient in application. A bit moody – in that godawful once a month kind of way. It took three coats to get it to the color you see in the pictures and it took forever and a day to dry. It held me up for the day I had allocated for swatching. Zoya dried quickly and only needed two coats.

I really should’ve had taken a picture of these colors in artificial lighting because that’s where they both fall extremely similar – you would almost never be able to tell the difference.

Anyway, come see what I mean below. I also tested for wearability on both and found they held their own after 3 days – all you’ll see is tip wear and my ghetto cuticles. It’s my right hand – what can I say?

American Apparel – Factory Grey

Monday, 15 November, 2010

First off — check out Belle, Bath and Beyond’s giveaway for Asian nail polishes: http://bellebathandbeyond.wordpress.com/2010/10/12/elianto-racing-green-other-nail-polishes-from-the-far-east-giveaway/

Definitely my first time trying out American Apparel. While I chose a color I feel has been done to death, the application for this was pretty good.

I chose grey for Monday because … it’s Monday and I have a blue on tap that really isn’t worthy of being dubbed a Monday Morning Blue, either. It’s bright and perky…and will be displayed tomorrow. I promise! Today’s Monday was (I thought) going to be grey and maybe a little depressing. Instead, the sun is shining and it’s feeling a little on the warm side. As I said yesterday in my Twitter – it’s mid-November, where the heck is my fall weather?!

Formula was a tad bit on the streaky side, but I could manage that. It was also fast drying. Woo hoo!

See below for the pics.

A Tale of Two Catherines by Rescue Beauty Lounge

Monday, 20 September, 2010

These landed on my doorstep today, bumping back poor Deborah Lippmann’s Bad Romance vs China Glaze’s Mummy May I. Those colors should show up on Wednesday.

The two colors that bumped it back? Rescue Beauty Lounge’s The Real Housewives of the Tudor Dynasty – Catherine and Catherine H. These 2 colors are part of their Fall 2010 collections.

The formula was quick drying but not as high gloss as their cremes. No worries, out of the 4 colors (the other 2 will be posted tomorrow) these two are really my favorite!

See below for the yumminess!

This beautiful blue grey purple is what I was hoping Zoya’s Kelly would’ve been on me. This color was gorgeous, even with the shimmer that ran through it.

I love this purple grey…it’s gorgeous. What do you think?

Nubar – Citadel

Wednesday, 1 September, 2010

Let me state, for the record…Right here, right now…how much I love grey nail polish. I love it so much, yet it won’t (or can’t) love me back.

See below for the horrific evidence.

Nubar nailed it very well with the formula – opaque in two very thin coats. Fast drying, too.

Nubar – Barricade (Fortress Collection 2010)

Thursday, 12 August, 2010

Part of the Fortress Collection by Nubar, I was excited by the prospect of these grays. Sadly, I really wish gray could/would work on me…it doesn’t. I look washed out and a bit sad and I refuse to try and rock it when the colors don’t even go well with my complexion.

Formula: Fast drying and opaque with minimal fuss, this went on quickly and easily with little to no cuticle pull. I really wish a lot of nail polish manufacturers could be on the ball like that.

Nubar – Dark Castle – Fortress Collection, Spring 2010

Thursday, 8 July, 2010

I’m back in action…with pictures that I had taken almost 2 months ago. Sorry!

This is Nubar’s Fortress Collection from Spring 2010. While I love the names and the application of the polish this collection left me a bit underwhelmed. Even the one I had anticipated, Knight’s Armor, didn’t make me go squeeeee like I had hoped.

I apologize in advance for the bad application of nail polish – I was too excited and it really shows.

This wasn’t a harsh black, but more of a mellow black with a subtle silver shimmer through it. It appears grey in the bottle but when on me it looked a bit more like charcoal. I think the sun really washed out the potential but if you look at the shade shot it best represents the color.

Once I edit the other shots I’ll be posting them as soon as possible. I’m happy to be back in the loop!

Nubar – Twilight and Sunset – Night Sky Collection – Spring/Summer 2010

Friday, 4 June, 2010

Finally! As promised the rest of the collection…you know, a whole 2 polishes.

Attention: Nail tape newbie strikes again! yes, another epic fail on my part. But I do get credit for trying, right? 🙂 Also, I used the Diamond Top Coat that came with the polishes. It said it would be shiny…and it wasn’t. You’ll see in the pics. Also, I don’t have another Twilight shot because…I deleted it in my attempt to multi-task – you know, book plane tickets, pay bills and run some pics through Photoshop. I learned my lesson, I promise!

Anyway, the formulas dried fast, but I still wasn’t thrilled with them. I guess I’m hard to please? I feel like I’ve seen these colors before and I have – they are Orly’s Metal Goth collection. Sorry, Nubar…I wasn’t impressed with this collection.

Nail tape n00b alert! See? But you can’t really see the shine, can you?

This was sort of matte, sort of shiny…and the top coat wasn’t super shiny and you can see it on my ring and middle finger. I tried to leave the pointer and pinkie finger as a matte.

Nubar – Midnight Matte – Night Sky Collection – Spring/Summer 2010

Wednesday, 2 June, 2010

I know I’ve said it before – I am not a fan of matte nail polishes.  They’re difficult to apply and if you mess it up, there is no way to really fix it. The only true bonus to them? They dry fast. Um, yay?

Nubar’s formula for this polish was no different. I’m a bit angry with myself for purchasing their collection and I will put up the other 2 swatches tomorrow. I didn’t put a top coat all the way on the polish to show how it looks, but I did put it on the tips.

My apologies for the bad shot in the shade…I had my camera set to a different setting and I forgot to put it back.

Before you say it or think it, yes. I am a nail tape n00b. Look at those definitive lines. *sigh* I’ll be practicing more with them…You’ll see if I improve tomorrow. 😀
